What to pack for a month in Mexico

Setting out for a month is exciting - new places, people, foods. Also new climates, mountains, beaches, cultural customs, and interpretations on what 'appropriate footwear' actually means.

You can see where 'what to pack?' can become (always becomes) an anxiety issue. We're about to break down what's in our bag for a month under the Mexican sun...or rain.

What you need to know about our packing style:

  • We are independent travellers, meaning we make our own way from point A to B.
  • Adventure - hikes, volcanos, beaches, rock climbing - we're pretty active and clothes reflect that.
  • Life in a carry - on. We are minimalist packers. Sorcery, we know.
  • Sacrifices have been big (Shampoo is also the conditioner, body wash and laundry detergent)...
  • We have done this before.

We realise our travel style isn't for everyone and that's perfectly cool! If you have a week and are going straight to your Mexican beach hotel, I ENVY YOU. Pack what makes you feel good. This list is meant to give you an idea of how it's possible to downsize a two bedroom Sydney flat into a baby size North Face backpack.

So let's get started. First HERS then HIS.

Somehow, all of this baggage manages to come in under 6kgs per bag and will make the carry-on cut with every tight-arsed budget airline you fly on.

Other tips/tricks we use:

  • Buy a big shampoo and toothpaste when you arrive,
  • Yes, the Shampoo is the conditioner, the bodywash and what we use to wash our stanky-ass clothes (all three of them).
  • Just buy it on the way! If you're beaching when you arrive and climbing a mountain late in the trip, just buy or rent a jacket when you get cold!
